| LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOL ASSESSMENT PROJECT BUILDING A SCHOOL'S CAPACITY AS A LEARNING COMMUNITY STUDY A STUDY BY: THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN AND BROCK UNIVERSITY Phase I: A study was conducted in 69 Ontario schools and 70 Saskatchewan schools in 2003 to investigate the factors that affect a school's ability to function as a learning community. Every school board nominated 2 schools to participate in the study. Holy Cross was nominated by the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board to take part in the study. This study will move onto phase II in order to further investigate the learning communities in 6 chosen high performing schools. Phase II: We are proud to say that Holy Cross was one of the 6 schools chosen to move onto phase II of the study. The phase II part of the study was conducted on February 25th, 2004. It was intended to further investigate the learning community through individual and/or focus-group interviews with staff, students and parents in the 6 high performing schools in Ontario and Saskatchewan that were chosen. The special interest in phase II were the strategies used in the schools to enhance the learning environment for students and for staff. Phase II continued to rely on the framework established in phase I, whereby school capacity was measured in relation to 3 categories: personal capacity of individual members of the community, interpersonal capacity of groups of staff, students, and/community members, and organizational capacity of the school and school system. Phase III: There will be 2 schools chosen out of the 6 that will be crowned "LIGHTHOUSE SCHOOLS." These schools will be used as models for shaping school improvement plans in Canadian schools. |
